The heat & air for this project has gone though several changes. At first I installed A unit from a 68 Cutlass. It worked ok, but the ac. just didn't quite do the job when the temps were high. I never could get enough air though it. So I bought an aftermarket unit that had heat,ac, and defrost made in one unit. I installed the unit in July. The air worked pretty good when it was hot, but I found it difficult to regulate the temp. I ended up riding with the windows down alot. Then in October I hooked up the heater core and it leaked. When I tried to get a heater core, I was told that the whole unit had to be replaced, the heater core and evaporator core are made together. I didn't like the unit much so since I had to completely remove it I decided that I didn't want it back in. I looked around the salvage yard for a small under dash unit that would be all one piece. I settled on a 88 Toyota Camry unit, it looked like it would fit, it was all cable controlled and I got the whole thing for 32 bucks. This is the aftermarket unit that I took out.
I took the heater core and evap. core out to mock it up. I welded washers in for mounting points. Then I patched the holes from the old unit and cut the new ones.
I didn't really like the heater connections coming out on the drivers side but the heater control valve is cool. Once the ac hoses are hooked up and I repaint the firewall I think it will look ok.
I used a fan switch from a Honda that has a button in the middle for the AC compressor. The fan is very quiet. I had to cut out the original defroster ducts so I could move the radio to the top of the dash. I made defroster ducts out of 1-1/2 inch exhaust adapters and made 1-1/2 plastic connections on the top of the unit and connected them with a short piece of flex hose. The defroster works as good as it ever did. The heater works great and is very controllable. The instrument panel is an original that I modified to install Autometer gauges
